As of October 1, 2021, gambling will be legal in the Netherlands and online casinos with a gambling license will be available. Initially, 17 licenses were granted. Meanwhile, there are already a 25 new licenses issued. Only online casinos with a license from the Kansspelautoriteit in The Hague are legal in the Netherlands.
If the casino has a license you are allowed to gamble there. Which gambling sites are these can be found on our current licensing page. All other sites are not, even if they have a license from another country.
Casinos and gambling in the Netherlands do not have a good reputation when it comes to payments. Our legislation keeps a close eye on gambling providers, and market forces (the reputation the casino has) ensure that most casino payments are simply safe. Furthermore, popular modern online casino payment methods such as iDEAL, credit cards and e-wallets are well encrypted against hacks, theft and identity fraud.
The casino game with the best chance of winning is blackjack. This popular card game has an RTP of 99.6% at best. The house advantage is then only 0.4%. European roulette also has a relatively high chance of winning if you play it safe on red or black, for example.
In the Netherlands, all gambling companies (online, casinos, lotteries, arcade games) must follow the rules for advertising. These rules mean that the advertisement must be clear about: what you will win, from what age you can play and the company itself. A game should not encourage people to play too often or for too long. It should also not encourage people to spend more money than they can afford. The game must not make things look better (such as suggesting that someone is going to win a prize). The game should not appeal to or focus on vulnerable groups of people or encourage people to make quick decisions. Gambling should not be advertised as a way to solve financial or personal problems, nor should it be sold as a way of life. Advertisements should also not encourage people to gamble a lot with bonuses such as happy hours or decisions that need to be made quickly.
In other countries it is sometimes allowed to bet on anything. For example, on the outcome of an election, the winner of the song festival or the date of birth of a new prince or princess. A bookmaker may not bet on a yellow or red card, for example. This is not allowed in the Netherlands. There are stricter rules here than in other countries.
