Our view on bet365 in the Netherlands

Bet365 was one of the first operators to enter the regulated Dutch gambling market in 2021. We have always found that slightly remarkable not because of the quality of the platform, but because bet365 has never had a particularly strong connection with the Netherlands. In our experience, bet365 still feels much more like a large international sportsbook that happens to operate in the Dutch market than a genuinely Dutch-focused gambling brand.

It has been relatively cautious with advertising, major Dutch sponsorships and local visibility, and over the years we have also had very little direct contact with the company. Where bet365 does stand out is the product itself. Sports betting is clearly its strength. The platform is professional, the sportsbook is extensive and the range of sports, competitions and betting markets is among the broadest available to Dutch players. So our first impression is straightforward: a very strong international sportsbook, but a brand with relatively little Dutch identity.

What is bet365?

The global brand

Bet365 was founded in 2000 in Stoke-on-Trent by Denise Coates and grew from a portakabin operation into one of the largest privately owned betting companies in the world. It built its reputation on things that are now industry standards live in-play betting, streaming, early cash-out and it still runs its sportsbook on its own technology rather than a white-label platform. That in-house stack is the main reason the in-play product feels faster and deeper than most of the Dutch competition.

The Dutch version lives at bet365.nl and is a separate, ring-fenced operation. You cannot use an international bet365 account from the Netherlands: Dutch residents are directed to the .nl platform, open a Dutch account with iDIN or document verification, and play within the rules of the Remote Gambling Act. Some products you may know from bet365 abroad bingo, lotto, betting on elections or television shows simply do not exist here, either because no Dutch licence was applied for or because Dutch law prohibits the market.

Who operates bet365 in the Netherlands?

Check the footer of bet365.nl or your bank statement and you will not find "bet365 Ltd". The legal entity behind the Dutch site is Hillside (New Media Malta) Plc, a Maltese subsidiary of the British bet365 group. Hillside is the party that holds the Dutch licence and the party the Kansspelautoriteit holds accountable for everything that happens on bet365.nl.

Why the licence holder's name differs from the brand name

This is standard practice in regulated European gambling: "bet365" is the customer-facing trademark, Hillside is the corporate vehicle that carries the legal responsibility. It matters for one practical reason if you ever check the KSA's public register or file a complaint, you search for Hillside, not bet365.

KSA licence information

Hillside (New Media Malta) Plc holds KSA licence number 1690 (reference 1690/01.247.819), effective from 1 October 2021, covering online sports betting and casino games in which players bet against the operator. The Dutch platform went live on 26 October 2021. You can verify the licence at any time in the official KSA Kansspelwijzer.

What a Dutch online gambling licence means

A KSA licence is not a formality. It obliges the operator to check every login against CRUKS, the national self-exclusion register; to make you set deposit, time and balance limits before you can play; to hold player funds separate from operating capital; and to have every game and random number generator audited by accredited test labs. Much of what players experience as friction on bet365.nl document requests, source-of-funds questions, limit confirmations is Dutch law, not company policy.

KSA enforcement history: a fine and a binding instruction

Bet365's Dutch record is not spotless, and it is worth knowing exactly where it went wrong. The KSA fined the operator €400,000 for advertising directed at young adults, a decision later upheld in court. Separately, the regulator issued a binding instruction because deposit limits had been raised without adequate source-of-funds checks, forcing bet365 to tighten its duty-of-care procedures. Neither case involved withheld winnings or rigged games both were about marketing and player-protection obligations but they show the KSA actively polices even the biggest global brands.

Market depth runs from the Eredivisie and Champions League down to lower divisions, with strong coverage of tennis, darts, basketball, Formula 1 and American sports. What is restricted under Dutch rules

If you have used bet365 abroad, expect a narrower offer. Dutch law prohibits betting on non-sporting events such as elections and award shows, restricts markets considered vulnerable to manipulation, and bans credit-funded gambling entirely. These restrictions apply to every licensed operator equally they are not a bet365 limitation.

Bonuses: doing the arithmetic on "up to 500 free spins"

The casino welcome offer gives players who deposit €10 or more ten turns on a prize wheel, headlined as up to 500 free spins. The word doing the work in that sentence is "up to". Each turn of the wheel awards 5, 10, 20 or 50 spins at probabilities of 40%, 45%, 10% and 5%. Run the numbers and ten turns average about 110 spins roughly €22 in value at €0.20 per spin. Landing the full 500 requires hitting the 5% outcome ten times in a row.

The genuinely unusual part sits elsewhere: winnings from the free spins carry no wagering requirement and can be withdrawn directly, which is rare in this market. On the sports side, a deposit from €5 earns betting credit worth five times the deposit, capped at €50. Under Dutch rules neither offer is available to players aged 18 to 24.

App, website and payments

Bet365 ships separate native apps for sports and casino on iOS and Android in the Netherlands, both mirroring the desktop platform with biometric login. Splitting the verticals keeps the sports app fast, which is where it matters.

Payment methods and verification

Deposits run through iDEAL/Wero from a €5 minimum, alongside debit cards, Trustly, Klarna, Paysafecard and PayPal credit cards are banned for gambling under Dutch law. Withdrawals go to your verified account; bet365 aims to process them within two hours and in practice it is often closer to one, which is genuinely fast for the Dutch market. Identity is verified at registration via iDIN or document checks.

Trustpilot reviews and their limitations

Look bet365 up on Trustpilot and you will find predominantly one-star reviews. Read them critically. A large share targets document and source-of-funds checks that Dutch law compels the operator to perform. Another share comes from players writing immediately after losing, blaming the platform for normal variance. The complaint that does hold up here and in every market bet365 operates in — is stake factoring: consistently winning sports bettors report having their maximum stakes cut sharply or accounts closed, usually without explanation. Balances are paid out and the practice is legal and common across bookmakers, but if you are a sharp bettor, expect it.
