Unibet Netherlands Review: An Institutional Giant Tested in the Regulated Market

Our view on Unibet in the Netherlands

Unibet is a very different story from many of the newer gambling brands in the Netherlands. Long before the Dutch regulated online gambling market opened, Unibet was already one of the best-known names among Dutch online bettors, particularly for sports betting. Alongside TOTO, it was a brand almost every Dutch sports bettor knew.

That history also has a less positive side. Before regulation, Unibet offered online gambling to Dutch players without a Dutch licence and was fined €470,000 by the Kansspelautoriteit in 2019. Its previous activity in the Netherlands also meant that Kindred, the group behind Unibet at the time, had to deal with the Dutch cooling-off rules. As a result, Unibet was not among the operators that launched when the regulated market opened in October 2021. Kindred stopped accepting Dutch players on 30 September 2021, later applied for a Dutch licence and received approval from the Kansspelautoriteit on 8 June 2022. Unibet.nl eventually went live on 4 July 2022.

In our view, Unibet simply belongs in the Dutch sports betting market. The brand had already built up enormous recognition here before regulation and, unlike some international operators, it does not feel unfamiliar to Dutch players. The platform itself is professional, established and particularly strong when it comes to sport betting. Visually, the green branding even gives it a little of the same familiar sportsbook feel as TOTO, although Unibet is obviously a completely separate international brand.

Unibet has not always been the best-behaved operator, however. Regulators have continued to intervene when things went wrong. In December 2025, the Dutch regulator imposed a €4 million fine on Unibet's Dutch operator for failures in its duty of care towards players. The Unibet operator in Great Britain was also fined £10 million by the UK Gambling Commission in 2025 for anti-money laundering and safer-gambling failures.

So our view is mixed but fairly clear: Unibet is an established, professional and very recognisable betting brand that has earned a genuine place in the Dutch sports betting market, but its regulatory record shows that even a company of this size does not always get everything right.

What is Unibet?

Unibet was founded in 1997 by the Swedish entrepreneur Anders Ström and grew from a small London-based betting operation into one of Europe's largest online gambling brands. The company behind it became the Kindred Group, a Malta-headquartered operator that also runs brands such as 32Red and Maria Casino. In October 2024 Kindred was acquired by the French group FDJ, the operator of the French national lottery, and the combined company now trades as FDJ United. For Dutch players this changed little in practice, but it does mean Unibet is no longer a Nordic-owned challenger: it is part of one of the largest gambling groups in Europe.

Unibet in the Dutch market

Few brands illustrate the transition from the grey market to the regulated Dutch market as well as Unibet. It was widely used by Dutch players long before a Dutch licence existed, which is precisely why it could not launch on day one: operators that had actively served Dutch players had to observe a cooling-off period before applying. Kindred closed the Netherlands to its players on 30 September 2021, the day before the regulated market opened, applied for a licence and received it on 8 June 2022. Unibet.nl launched on 4 July 2022 as a separate Dutch platform, operating under the Remote Gambling Act with Dutch account verification via iDIN and mandatory CRUKS checks.

KSA licence information

The Dutch licence for unibet.nl is held by Optdeck Service Limited, a Maltese entity within the group. This is worth knowing: if you check the Kansspelautoriteit register or file a complaint, you search for Optdeck, not Unibet or Kindred. The licence was granted on 8 June 2022. You can verify it at any time in the official KSA register.

KSA enforcement history

Unibet's Dutch record deserves an honest paragraph, because it is longer than most. In 2019, before regulation, the Kansspelautoriteit fined the group €470,000 for offering online gambling to Dutch players without a licence. In 2025 the regulator imposed an order under penalty after prohibited sports betting offers appeared via Optdeck, something we covered at the time. And on 1 December 2025 the KSA imposed a €4 million fine on Optdeck, a record for a duty-of-care case, for failures between July 2022 and July 2024: players who deposited thousands of euros per day without timely intervention, income checks that came weeks too late, warnings that were no more than dismissable pop-ups, and affordability assessments that wrongly counted business account funds. None of these cases involved withheld winnings or manipulated games, but together they show a pattern the regulator keeps having to correct.

Unibet.nl is fully integrated with CRUKS: register there and you are barred from Unibet and every other licensed operator in the Netherlands at once. Deposit, time and balance limits are mandatory at account creation, and since October 2024 deposits above €700 per month (€300 for under-24s) trigger a mandatory affordability check at every licensed operator. An active KSA licence verifiable in the public register, one of Europe's largest gambling groups behind it since the FDJ takeover, ring-fenced player funds as required by Dutch law, audited games, and a long payout record in the Netherlands with no systemic non-payment disputes on verified accounts.

Complaints and our experience

The pattern in complaints and enforcement is consistent: the product is solid, the brakes have not always been. The 2025 duty-of-care fine in the Netherlands and the £10 million UK penalty in the same year both concern player protection rather than fairness of games or payouts.
