Ban on untargeted gambling advertisements postponed

As the law still has to pass through the Lower and Upper Houses, as well as be approved by the Council of State, 1 January 2023 is too early for postponement. Instead, minister Weerwind suggests postponing the ban until March 2023.

Law Minister Franc Weerwind

Law Minister Franc Weerwind noted during the Gaming Commission debate the year of legal online gambling. He hoped the remote gambling law would draw people from the illegal to the legal to replace their current business with a legally regulated one.

Banned advertising in 2023

From January 2023, companies banned from advertising high-risk online gambling must also stop all sponsorship. All supposed gambling offers must be completely anonymous about their identity by then. At the request of Law Minister Weerwind, the council of ministers discussed adding the Wrvk Decree to their list of legal amendments. They decided to exempt all programmes, events and sports from sponsorship restrictions from 1 January 2025. Moreover, on a minister's suggestion, all shirt sponsorship was deemed illegal.
