Government advises moderate advertising with sports betting during Football World Cup

Before and during the World Cup in Qatar, Ksa asks gambling providers to handle their advertisements responsibly. Indeed, sports betting is expected to be heavily advertised by bookmakers in the Netherlands.

The Ksa cited Minister Franc Weerwind's call on 6 and 19 October that related to gambling policy. In his letter, Weerwind requested gambling companies to moderate their World Cup-related ads. A complete ban on untargeted advertising for high-risk games of chance is currently being worked on. World Cup officials have granted a temporary exemption from the ban on political ads. This was due to the many political ads that appeared after 1 October 2021 when the legal online gambling market opened.

The Ksa provides examples and clarifications in a letter. Since 30 June, any Dutch role models such as professional athletes and influencers must be ignored by advertisers. Moreover, online gambling sites cannot target people under 18 or over 65. This also applies to betting on who gets a yellow card or ends up in a corner. The Ksa is monitoring illegal activities during the World Cup. If anyone offers illegal services, the Ksa will immediately investigate and punish violators with sanctions.
