In the Netherlands there is no such obligation, explains the Dutch Lottery. Here, all newly rich people are anonymous. To protect the prize-winners, we never reveal their names. And that is mainly because you never know how the environment of a brand new millionaire will react. Winning a big cash prize can mean gaining a lot of friends, or it can mean being mugged. That is why many prize winners want to remain anonymous. Fortunately, this is possible in the Netherlands, but not always abroad.
For that reason, prize winners of high amounts are also invited to the office of the Dutch Lottery. They receive extra information, and we keep in touch with the winners. We call them back a number of times, and they can always call us themselves if they have any questions.
